Find out more about Alex Dewar, a lead capture technician based at Pinewood in the UK. Not only a seasoned veteran in the full body and prop team, she’s also taken charge of R&D for our Radiance Field work, she’s part of the Dorothy team and she’s a swiss army knife behind the scenes, working to develop our internal pipelines and processes.

CAS: What’s your name, where are you from, and where are you now?
Alex: Hello, my name is Alex Dewar, I am originally from South Africa but now I live in slightly sunny UK.

What do you do at Clear Angle Studios?
I’m part of the full body and prop capture and processing teams. Most of the time, I work at our main office in Pinewood Studios. I do a lot of different things, like setting up scanning systems and creating data processing pipelines. I work on many different projects, both in the UK and other countries.
In addition, I’m proud to be part of our groundbreaking Radiance Fields team. We’re pushing the boundaries of capture technology to create stunning, one-of-a-kind Gaussian Splats. It’s a challenging and exhilarating project, and I’m thrilled to be part of such an innovative team

What do you like most about working here?
I studied animation in South Africa before moving to the UK to work at Clear Angle Studios. I enjoyed the experience of working on live action films and learning how to use scanning systems. I like meeting new people and seeing the work that goes into costumes, props, and sets. I’m particularly excited about our innovative R&D projects and the prospect of working on international films, expanding my horizons and contributing to the creation of unforgettable cinematic experiences

What’s the best project you’ve worked on?
It’s tough to narrow down my favorite films, but working on Dungeons & Dragons and Aliens: The Series were the biggest highlights for me. Dungeons & Dragons was a particularly fun project. Setting up a rig in a room that the studio referred to as a ‘Cell’ was a unique and slightly spooky experience, but once my team and I got settled, the adventure began. After filming was done, it was incredibly rewarding seeing all the amazing props we scanned come to life on screen. Aliens: The Series was a great opportunity to use all my skills and travel. I made new friends and the crew became like family. It was more than just a project; it was a great experience.

What’s one piece of kit or software that makes your job better?
A trusty vice grip is an essential tool in my kit. It’s incredibly versatile and has saved the day countless times. And, of course, the classic pen and notebook are always indispensable.

Give us a recommendation for something you like. (Anything, could be a film, a musician, a restaurant, a place to go on holiday)
I’m a passionate gamer, adventurous traveler, and self-proclaimed napping expert. Don’t disturb my slumber unless it’s time to level up or catch a flight. And if neither of those is on the agenda, you’ll find me immersed in the world of knitting.
